A few months ago, my family and I set a goal for ourselves to eat out less in order to save money, and that way we could spend time together at home (and save money for travel!). But sometimes, we crave a dish or dessert that one would taste at a restaurant.

Mami and I found a recipe from an Egyptian blogger. Her cooking blog, Cleobuttera, is an elegant fusion of classic desserts with a modern twist, and captivating stories. We made her recipe for Molten Chocolate Mug Cake, a decadent, small chocolate cake that’s baked…in a mug in the microwave. Since at my house, we have a few (*ahem*) coffee mugs, it’s the ideal dessert for a night when you wish you could bring the restaurant home to you.

Ingredientes

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup of all-purpose flour, sifted
  • ¼ cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon of baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons of milk (whole or 2% works)
  • 1 small egg
  • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 oz. of lightly broken-up chocolate (I used Ghirardelli 60% chocolate chips)
  • 1 tablespoon of water

Instrucciones:

Cake

•   In a large mug with capacity of up to 2 cups, mix well with a fork the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

•   Add the melted butter, milk, egg, and vanilla. Mix well.

•   Place the pieces of chocolate in the center of the mixture, but do not push them in.

•   Pour the tablespoon of water on top of the mixture.

•   Cook in the microwave for 1 minute and 15 seconds to 1 minute and a half, depending on your microwave. (Mine is 1,000 watts and it takes 1 minute and 30 seconds.)

•   It shouldn’t be completely dry on top.

•   It’s normal for the cake to rise like a soufflé, and then to drop again.

•   Let it cool for a few minutes…then, enjoy!
