“To travel is to be born and to die at every instant […] all the things of life are perpetually fleeing before us; the dark and bright intervals are intermingled; after a dazzling moment, an eclipse; we look, we hasten, we stretch out our hands to grasp what is passing; each event is a turn in the road […].”

“I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.”

Me empecé a desesperar.

When my parents and I began planning a trip to France over a year ago, I never imagined the obstacles that would present themselves to postpone it. I began to grow desperate. I needed an escape from our daily routine. I lost faith that it would come to pass. Finally, after life’s many twists and turns, we managed to purchase our plane tickets and off we went!

With three people (myself included) and a limited budget, we couldn’t always stay at pricey hotels. So, we needed options. Thank God for Airbnb! In several cities, we were able to book our stay at apartments that gave us the cultural authenticity and personal connection we craved in France.

Our first stop at an Airbnb was in Nice, where we spent five nights. The host of this apartment unfortunately had a personal emergency, and was not able to be available as we would have hoped. However, the apartment could not have been more ideally located, and we had practically everything we needed– extra clean bedclothes, comfortable mattresses, and even a Nespresso (yup!) machine with pods. 😉

We stayed in a one-bedroom apartment with a bathroom and kitchen. Everything we went to in Nice, we walked. That’s how convenient it was.

For us, it was essential to have a balcony in the apartment, no matter how small, facing the street. Fortunately, we found one with a balcony. It was our favorite feature.

There’s nothing better than buying food from the local supermarket and enjoying dinner on the balcony at night, while the streets of Nice light up with nocturnal life.

And the day we arrived, thanks to the recommendation of our host, we ended up dining at a typical Provençale restaurant…with a Spanish chef who has become a friend. I cannot wait to share more about this experience soon. In the meantime, enjoy an interview (in Spanish) I did with Chef Antonia.

Finally, our last Airbnb stop during our trip was in Paris! I can’t express how many years I had been dreaming of going to the City of Lights.

Although we never met our host, he communicated with me via text messages, and he even spoke to me in Spanish. He offered us a comprehensive list of suggestions for places to eat and things to do in Le Marais, where we stayed.

Nuestra nueva amiga, Myriam, y yo, almorzando. Our new friend, Myriam, and I, having lunch.

In Paris, we had the opportunity to meet with new friends, thanks to the Spina Bifida Association in France. It was an unforgettable opportunity to meet others with spina bifida, like me, and their families, and to practice my French! I will soon share more about this gathering on Holdin’ Out for a Hero.

After we met, Myriam, who has spina bifida, and her mother, Patricia, invited us to spend an afternoon/evening with them, having lunch with them, visiting their home, and then taking us on a spectacular scenic tour of Paris at night!! We cannot thank them enough for their hospitality and friendship.

Consejos para anfitriones y huéspedes de Airbnb:

Advice for hosts and guests with Airbnb:

  • Huéspedes:
  • Guests:

-Pregunta, pregunta, pregunta.

-Ask, ask, ask. Don’t risk reserving and paying for an apartment that will result in being uncomfortable or inconvenient for you. Be sure to ask the most important questions before booking. If you have a specific need (a full kitchen, first floor apartment, an elevator, washing machine), make that clear so you don’t stress out later. Ask where to leave the trash for pickup (and the recyclables).

-Leave everything the way you found it (or even better, if possible. If you have any food leftovers, store them in the fridge so they don’t go bad. Make the beds, and leave the bathroom and kitchen clean. Remember that the host will also review you as a guest. You don’t want to earn a bad reputation with other potential Airbnb hosts.

No hagas ruido excesivo.

-Respect the rules of the apartment/house (for example, if smoking or pets are not allowed). Don’t make excessive noise. Treat your home away from home as you would wish for others to treat your house.

-Examine everything as soon as you arrive to determine if you need to go out to buy something important that may be missing.

  • Anfitriones:
  • Hosts:

-Communication is critical for a successful stay– for both the host and the guest. Don’t take advantage by way of omission. If there’s a potential problem with the apartment or there’s an unexpected situation, contact the guest as soon as possible.

-Store extra clean bedding (including pillows) in the bedroom closet. It may seem like something simple, but it can be very helpful to your guest.

-Invest in a comfortable mattress. It’s an essential aspect of creating a comfortable space that will make your guests want to stay there again.

-Before your guest’s arrival, make sure the apartment is equipped with all the essentials– toilet paper, soap, paper towels, cleaning supplies, and clean bath towels.

-As soon as you can, send your guest a message with the Wi-Fi password, and leave it written down in a prominent place in the apartment.

-Extra details that can please your guest: a bottle of cold water (or wine!) in the refrigerator, maps and tourism guides of the area, a personal welcome note with your contact information.

When all is said and done, I learned something very important. On every trip you take, no matter where you go, you will find what you are looking for. With a (generally) positive attitude and a heart that is open to possibilities and to people, we were able to connect with incredible people,

Like my friend Victor Hugo said, every time we travel, we die a little. It simply means that one cannot go back to being the same person they once were.

And, you know what? I don’t ever wish to be the same person.
