Almost three years ago at a conference in Chicago, I was at a reception (okay, party) when a young, elegant man asked Mami to dance.
Soon they were laughing together, and Mami introduced him to me. His name is Javier Moreno, and he is now Manager of Corporate Communications for Toyota Motor North America. He also works closely with Toyota’s initiatives relating to Latinos.

We saw each other at another event, and in 2012 Toyota hosted an event for bloggers in Houston, where I asked Javier if they were sponsoring bloggers to attend conferences. He said, not yet.

Last year, at Hispanicize 2013, I had the honor and privilege of being the first blogger to be sponsored by Toyota for a conference. The entire experience was a dream come true. There, from the beginning, I met Janice Lusky-Greenspan of Precise Communications, as they are in charge of Toyota in the southeast. The Toyota representative assigned to accompany me and make sure I had a good time, has actually become one of my dearest friends.

I left Miami asking myself what I had done to deserve so many good things.

This year, 2014, I formed part of an exclusive group of bloggers and communicators who were ambassadors of Toyota at Hispanicize. On Wednesday, I attended a lunch with all of them, after a drive to Biscayne Bay on a day with perfect weather.

Looking out to the sea on that tranquil afternoon, I kept thanking God– and my guardian angels– for the unpredictable turns that my life has taken. In the past nearly five years, I’ve gone from being an insecure young girl, to being a more confident and happier woman.

I’ve learned during this week that the opportunities are there for the taking– you just have to ask.
